Jo Pyne
Jo Pyne is the Director of Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE (TNQIT), with more than 25 years experience in the vocational education and training sector. TNQIT delivers more than 200 training programs to approximately 14,000 students annually from nine campuses spread across a 268,000 sq km area, incorporating all of Cape York Peninsula. The Institute employs more than 400 full-time equivalent staff and is the TAFE Queensland lead centre for aquaculture, marine and Indigenous training. TNQIT has identified sustainability, environmental management and planning as key focus areas for future training program delivery.
Dr Garry McDonald
Dr Garry McDonald is the Manager, National Centre for Sustainability (NCS) at Swinburne University. Garry has managed the strategic and business operations of NCS-Swinburne for about 12 months. The NCS is a collaboration of several tertiary institutes aimed at providing educational programs in sustainability through partnership with industry, government and community. Garry is currently focussed on an initiative to embed sustainability into every aspect of Swinburne University operations, most prominently, into the education and training curricula and courses of the University. In his previous recent roles with the Department of Primary Industries, Garry was Research Director, Sustainable Landscape Systems and Institute Director, Rutherglen Research Institute.
Kim Forde Kim Forde is an experienced environmental manager, with more than 15 years expertise in project management, environmental health & safety, environmental auditing, policy & strategy, and site assessment & mitigation including erosion and sediment control. Her knowledge extends from the energy industry through to natural resource management to tourism in Far North Queensland. She is often consulted by Councils and Developers on environmental issues in the region, providing training and advice on codes of practice and sustainable development in practice.
Moni Carlisle
Moni Carlisle is the Education and Training Program Leader with Terrain NRM, the Wet Tropics regional natural resource management group. Highlights of her work include pre-service and professional development training for regional educators incorporating ecoliteracy initiatives across school based curriculum outcomes. Moni is on the DEST Advisory Panel for Enterprise Education, the steering committee for Queensland’s Education Partnerships for Sustainability (QEPFS) and the Queensland and Northern Territory ARIES funded Education for Sustainability Pre-Service Teacher’s Program (IQUEST).
Maree Grenfell
Maree Grenfell is the Sustainability Officer at Cairns Regional Council. This new position was created by Douglas Shire Council and Maree has been working in this role for close to two years. In this time Maree has been able to demonstrate opportunities for local government to embrace the principles of sustainability and start putting them into practice. Maree has over 9 years of experience working with local government, the building industry and the private sector providing sustainable solutions benefiting the quadruple bottom line. She has worked extensively as a sustainability consultant, providing advice and working tools to companies who recognise the benefits of improving their environmental sustainability and the way this is communicated to stakeholders. With a background in psychology, sustainable design, training and facilitation, Maree is an advocate of collaborative and creative processes as drivers for positive social change.
Peter Collins
Peter Collins is the Cairns Branch Manager of the Housing Industry Association. Peter joined the HIA four years ago after a successful 16 year career with building products manufacturer James Hardie, working in Queensland, New South Wales and Papua New Guinea. He has an excellent knowledge of building products and markets and facilitates the HIA Greensmart program in Cairns.
Stewart Christie
Stewart Christie is the Cairns Office Leader for Arup, a global design, engineering and business consulting company. He has lived in Cairns since 2001 and has previously worked in Brisbane, Singapore, Malaysia and the UK. Stewart has over 15 years experience in management consulting, project management, engineering design and construction management. He has a particular interest in sustainable development and is a member of the steering committee for the Tropical North Queensland Sustainable Region initiative. Stewart will be joined in his presentation by fellow steering committee member John Rainbird, Senior Regional Liaison Officer, Cairns & Far Northern Region, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
Jason Van Ballegooyen, Manager Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability at Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE, is implementing a range of sustainability projects across the educational and operational arms of the Institute. He lead the Institute’s drive to become the only Queensland member of the National Centre for Sustainability and is currently working to embed sustainability training units into courses in the Faculty of Business, Environment, Sustainability and Tourism. Jason lives in Cairns with his wife Rowena and daughters Matisse and Abigail, who deserve every opportunity to enjoy a sustainable future.
